SEVEN World War Two bombs found at Cotswolds wedding venue

Summary

Seven historic German bombs were found in the field of a popular Cotswolds wedding venue. A bomb disposal squad and police officers were called out to a field by The Great Tythe Barn, near Tetbury, after the ordnance was found on Monday morning (November 2).

Details

The surrounding area was evacuated, and the popular wedding venue was closed while emergency services cordoned off the area and the bomb squad assessed the items. A 200m cordon was in place, Cotswolds Neighbourhood Police said at the time. It is understood that seven 1kg German Incendiary bombs were discovered by construction workers at the site at around 9.50am.

They were detonated by the Army’s disposal team. The Great Tythe Barn confirmed it reopened yesterday afternoon after the devices were detonated. Gloucestershire Police said at the time: “A controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance has taken place.

“The Explosives Ordnance Disposals team (EOD) was called to Long Newnton near Tetbury following the discovery by construction workers earlier this morning.

A precautionary cordon which was put in place for the public’s safety has now been removed.” An Army spokesperson said: “We can confirm that an Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal team from 721 Sqn, 11 EOD&S Regiment RLC, responded to an incident in the Cotswolds at the request of Gloucestershire Police.”
