Kingsway woman charged for 27 shoplifting offences

Summary

A 41-year-old Kingsway woman who stole thousands of pounds worth of goods from local stores in a series of 27 shoplifting raids has received a suspended jail sentence. Rhiannon Gibbons, of Silverstone Walk, Kingsway, pleaded guilty at Cheltenham Magistrates Court to a campaign of thefts from Tesco Express, Boots and Sainsbury’s between May and September this year.

Details

Of the 27 theft charges she admitted, nine did not specify the value of the goods she stole but the other eighteen did – and they added up to almost £3,000. She stole twelve times from Tesco Express stores in Quedgeley and Tuffley, eight times from Sainsbury’s in Barnwood and 7 times from the Boots store at Olympus Park. The goods she targeted were alcohol, beauty products, cheese and confectionery.

The two highest value thefts were both from Boots – £773 worth of cosmetics on 21st August this year and another £888 worth six days later. Gibbons was sentenced to a total of eight weeks jail suspended for a year, 12 months supervision and a six months alcohol rehabilitation order which includes providing regular samples for testing.

On two of the charges she was ordered to pay compensation totalling £382 and the magistrates also ordered her to pay £60 costs. The magistrates stated “The offences are so serious that only a custodial sentence can be justified, The reasons for this: nature and seriousness, sustained period of repeat offending, number of offences.”
