Dentist could fill Gloucester shop which has sat empty for 18 years

Summary

A waterfront unit in Gloucester Quays which has sat empty for 18 years could become a dentist studio. The property sits on the edge of the docks in between the Brewhouse & Kitchen and The Gym Group. It has failed to find an occupier since being constructed as part of the shopping hub in 2008.

NUYU Dental & Aesthetics, which has clinics in Cheltenham and Bristol, now wants to fill the gap and transform it into their third location. Bosses at Gloucester Quays have applied to alter a retail outlet restriction on unit R2 so it can be let out to the company as a dental health and beauty studio. NUYU is described as a “modern, high-end” business providing advanced dentistry with aesthetic medicine.

It offers routine dental check-ups, hygiene care and orthodontics such as clear aligners, cosmetic smile makeovers, dental implants, and a wide range of facial aesthetic treatments.

The application to Gloucester City Council said: “With a strong client base there is a desire to expand the business and Gloucester has been identified as a key location.” The unit has been close to being let on several occasions with Brewhouse & Kitchen looking to extend into the space and burger restaurant Hub Box applying to open there in 2022.

Booth plans fizzled out and Quays bosses said the new planning permission would allow “an effective and efficient use of an existing longstanding vacant unit which is located prominently in the city”. They want the use to remain flexible to allow retail outlet use in the future.

The application said the new clinic would contribute “positively to the health and wellbeing of the community and general economic vitality and viability of the city” There would be no changes to the exterior of the building and so “no adverse impacts” on the character of the area or existing commercial activity. Gloucester City Council is due to determine the application by August 26.
