New Cheltenham self storage facility moves a step closer
Summary
Plans for signage on a new storage facility have been given the go-ahead. UK Storage Company secured permission to use the site on Chosen View Road in Cheltenham for self-storage and for partial demolition of the building in October 2025. The vacant site, at the junction with Swindon Road and bordered by the railway line, was previously used as a Buildbase builders’ merchant.

The Planning Statement prepared by Jon Dingle Ltd said: “The planning application proposals relate to the existing building and hardstanding.
They can be summarised as: – Re-cladding of building elevations and removal of roller shutter doors – Partial extension in middle of building to raise one section of roof – Installation of 74 external storage units on hardstanding – Landscaping along main road frontages “The proposals have benefitted from pre-application advice from officers.
In particular, the external storage units have been pulled back from the site’s two road frontages, and landscaping has been introduced along these edges.” The roof-level extension will create the volume within the building to allow for a new mezzanine at first floor level. The builders’ merchant stored builders’ materials on the hardstanding on the site. UK Storage Company will use this space for new storage units.
The Planning Statement added that the external storage would remove ‘visual clutter’ and ‘significantly improving the overall appearance of the site’. In total, the external storage units will provide 1,243sqm self-storage floorspace. Two sizes of unit will be used, but they will have the same external appearance and will both be three metres tall.

The Planning Statement continued: “Customers using the external units would use the existing parking spaces and use a trolley to transport their goods between their vehicle and storage unit.” The Design and Access Statement from Scroxton Architects described the plans as ‘using a brownfield site and making it a viable location for commercial use’.
It added:” The proposed re-cladding of the building will improve its appearance from Swindon Road, whilst the proposed external storage units by virtue of their height will be unobtrusive in the street scene. The addition of the proposed boundary planting will further enhance the site’s appearance.” The improved buildings will have seven signs on the building elevations and two on the boundary fence.
Work has already started on making the changes to the building, which will be open from 8am to 6pm, seven days a week.
