Emmerdale star leads hundreds of walkers at Starlight Hike

Summary

Emmerdale star James Moore, who plays Ryan Stocks in the hit ITV soap, led waves of walkers for a sparking evening of celebration and remembrance at Sue Ryder’s annual Starlight Hike. Around 950 people stepped out for Sue Ryder Starlight Hike Gloucestershire, sponsored by Allstone Speedy Skips and Monster Mix, which returned to Ashley Manor Preparatory School on Saturday, October 17.

Details

James, who was taking on the challenge in memory of his dad, Steve, was first to set off on the 10km route from the school and around the spa town followed by groups of families, friends and colleagues making every step count for Sue Ryder and those important to them. James said: “I felt honoured to have led the way for walkers at this incredible event.

The atmosphere was magical and it truly was such a special way to mark my dad’s memory in our hometown. “Crossing the finish line felt like such an achievement.

Well done to everyone who took part and raised money for Sue Ryder – an incredible charity who do incredible work ensuring that no one has to face death or grief alone.” James signed up for the hike with his friend Jude Wilcox, who was also walking in memory of her dad. Jude’s dad Mike Wilson was cared for by Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice in the final days of his life.

Jude added: “We were welcomed with open arms at the most devastating moment of our lives. Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice staff didn’t just see a patient, they saw and cared for us as a whole family.” The event has raised more than £106,000 so far, helping Sue Ryder continue to deliver expert palliative and bereavement support, including through Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice.

The hike began at 6pm with live music from talented local choirs and an energising Zumba warm-up before walkers set off at 8pm. Embracing the spirit of the event, supporters in brightly coloured outfits, glitter and glow sticks could be seen lighting up the way throughout the evening.

Participants were also invited to pass through Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice, which was softly lit with festoon lights, to pause and place a star in memory of someone important to them. At the finish line, walkers were presented with medals to mark their achievement.

Alysia Cameron-Price, regional fundraising team manager at Sue Ryder , said: “As always, this year’s Sue Ryder Starlight Hike Gloucestershire was filled with joy, laughter and memories, as well as the chance to honour and celebrate those close to us. It was absolutely wonderful.
