'Bullseye Beth' triumphs in Punchline Social Darts challenge

Summary

If you’ve already had enough of wall-to-wall World Cup football and the heat is starting to get to you, the Punchline team can thoroughly recommend a visit to Flight Club. Six Punchline journalists enjoyed a terrific – and rather comic – evening at the fairground-inspired Social Darts venue in The Brewery Quarter , Cheltenham, last night (Thursday).

Details

With temperatures soaring well into the 30s, we began our late afternoon summer social seated in the outdoor terrace which has recently been transformed into a floral paradise. We enjoyed refreshing drinks and a bite to eat from a menu which offers the likes of tacos, sliders and pizzas.

After a splendid 90 minutes catching up with tales of the day, we then made our way into the gloriously air conditioned bar for the main event – the Punchline Social Darts Challenge. Editor Mark Owen was definitely one to watch, having claimed he once reached the quarter-finals of a Swedish darts competition back in the day.

Reporter Rob Jenkins also claimed to have ‘played a bit’ back in his youth, but no one could really have predicted what was to follow. The first game, Demolition, involved each player starting on 180 and working their way down to finish on the exact number required. With throws going all over the shop, the game took quite a bit longer than anticipated but ended with head of content Beth Winter triumphing.

The second game – Donkey Derby – involved players aiming for their allotted number and moving their donkey forward each time they hit it, also having the option to hit other players’ numbers to move them backwards. We all thought that lightning couldn’t strike twice but Beth proved once again to be the coolest under pressure with her technique of throwing three darts in quick succession paying off.

After that, we played Limbo, a really fun game where you have to score less than the previous player. Needless to say, Beth won this one too! Next up was Shanghai where you score points on the target number only, with extra points for doubles and trebles.

Reporter Rob Jenkins finally got into his stride and showed off his skills by winning this game, as well as the final game, Snakes & Ladders where players use the dartboard to roll the dice and progress up the Snakes & Ladders board. The evening’s overall winner was none other than our Beth, who did actually confess that she had been to Flight Club on a couple previous occasions.

Punchline reporter Simon Hacker said: “Flight Club might conjure images of rumbustious blokes spilling each other’s pints while inadvertently impersonating Jim Bowen, but it actually has a pretty laid-back vibe and some of the enclosed booths allow even the most incompetent players to explore their motor skills without being on public parade.
