Man targeted Sainsbury's during £7,000 shoplifting spree

Summary

A prolific shoplifter has admitted targeting a Gloucester Sainsbury’s store for 21 high value thefts which netted him almost £7,000 worth of alcohol, clothing and washing products. During an eight-month period this year, Martin Bond, aged 38, of Ryecroft Street, Gloucester, walked out of Sainsbury’s in Barnett Way, Gloucester, with almost £7,000 worth of goods, magistrates in Cheltenham were told.

He also stole on eight occasions from city branches of Lidl, Tesco, the Co-op and Farm Foods, taking a total of more than £1,100 worth of products from those stores. The magistrates bailed Bond for a pre-sentence report and he is due back before the court on November 3. He has been warned that all sentencing options including prison are open.

While on bail he must not enter any shops except his local Morrisons store in Barton Street, Gloucester. He is also barred from going into Cheltenham except for court hearings. The court was told that Bond’s trail of 30 thefts began in April last year when he stole meat and cheese worth £124.95 from the Co-op in Barnwood Road, Gloucester.

Then on June 11 last year he stole three hanging baskets from Lidl in Eastern Avenue and four washing pods from Farm Foods. The rest of his thefts were committed this year, starting on January 5 with a £300 theft of food and alcohol from Sainsbury’s. That was the first of his 21 thefts from the Barnwood Sainsbury’s over the next eight months.

He took as much as £500 worth of goods on each occasion from the store, the smallest theft being £60 worth of alcohol in March.
