Summary

Local people can take a step back in time and explore remarkable archaeological discoveries, uncovered as part of the pre-construction work on the M5 Junction 10 Improvements Scheme.

Details

Archaeological Research Services (ARS) is hosting an archaeology open day on Thursday, October 15 from 10am to 3:30pm, offering visitors the opportunity to meet archaeologists, view artefacts recovered from the site and learn more about the area’s rich history.

Archaeological investigations carried out to date have uncovered evidence of a previously hidden landscape dating back to the Late Iron Age and Romano-British periods, providing new insights into the lives of people who lived in the area thousands of years ago. The open day will give visitors the chance to: – Discover the latest archaeological findings from the excavations.

– View genuine artefacts recovered from the site. – Meet the archaeologists carrying out the work and learn about excavation techniques. – Find out how specialist technologies, including drone and geophysical survey equipment, are being used to investigate the past.

– Ask questions and learn more about archaeology and the discoveries made during the scheme.

Cllr Julian Tooke, cabinet member for business, economic development, planning and infrastructure , said: “The archaeological discoveries being made as part of the M5 Junction 10 Improvements Scheme are helping us build a better understanding of Gloucestershire’s past, while delivering infrastructure that will support future growth and development.

“This open day is a fantastic opportunity for residents to see some of these discoveries first-hand, speak directly with the experts involved and learn more about the fascinating history that has been uncovered beneath the site.” Davis Strubergs, senior archaeologist at ARS , said: ”The M5 excavations have revealed a hidden landscape from early prehistory through to the Iron Age, Romano-British and Anglo-Saxon periods, buried below the fields at Uckington.

We’re looking forward to welcoming visitors on the day and sharing some of the amazing finds that are re-telling the story of the early people of Cheltenham.” Due to limited parking and site safety requirements, places must be booked in advance. A registration link is available on the scheme webpage at www.gloucestershire.gov.k/J10. Bookings will remain open until all available spaces have been allocated.
