Steam train ride between Cotswolds destinations has £1 kids' tickets, cafes and stunning views

A popular Cotswolds attraction is offering a ‘kids go for a quid’ deal throughout the summer, meaning up to three youngsters under 15 can hop on board for just £1 each until the end of August. The Gloucestershire-Warwickshire Steam Railway (GWSR) travels a 14-mile route from Cheltenham Racecourse to Broadway, passing through the historic Greet Tunnel and across the Stanway Viaduct.

Each station has its own character, traditional features and cafes. It takes about an hour to travel the whole route but visitors are encouraged to “take your time, hop on and off, and discover what makes each station unique”. Until the end of August, under-15s can travel for just £1, provided they are travelling with up to two adults paying the full fare of £26.60 each.
The railway has also come up with a free activities pack to keep youngsters entertained as their heritage train gently chugs through the glorious Cotswolds countryside.
The ‘kids for a quid’ deal also allows youngsters to take part in other summer events including Teddy Bear Picnic trains on select dates in August (the first three Thursdays of the month), as well as locomotive-themed family fun and crafts from August 11-23 in the Tim Mitchell Building at Winchcombe Station.
Fiona Tarbet, GWSR marketing officer, said: “We know times are tough with many families having to draw the purse-strings tight, so we hope this will make it easier to give children a fun day out.

Many attractions around the country are running offers this summer to encourage more families to visit, as part of a government initiative called Summer Savings, running until September 1. A spokesperson explained: “The government has temporarily reduced VAT on children’s admissions and children’s meals from 20% to 5%. Participating businesses are passing on those savings as discounted offers for families.
“The standard rate of VAT on children’s admission tickets (including family tickets) and children’s meals has been temporarily reduced from 20% to 5% for the summer. This means a 12.5% reduction in the VAT-inclusive price. Many businesses are passing on the full saving or offering additional discounts on top.”
