From Frankenstein to the Pre Raphaelites: The art of Theodor von Holst

From 10 October 2026 to 30 May 2027, visitors will have the chance to see more than ten works from private collections, including a recently discovered self-portrait and the striking Spanish Lady – the last painting Theodor exhibited at the Royal Academy.

Admired by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Theodor’s work helped pave the way for the bold and dramatic style that later became synonymous with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. These loaned works will be displayed in two period rooms at Holst Victorian House, the Drawing Room and the Bedroom, alongside the museum’s own permanent collection of Theodor paintings.

Hung against the background of rich Victorian wallpapers and authentic furniture, the exhibition offers a rare opportunity to experience Theodor’s work in the type of settings he and his family would have lived in.

An illustrated catalogue will accompany the exhibition, detailing the story of Theodor’s rediscovery over the past 50 years after he slipped into obscurity following his untimely death at just 33 years old.

Written by leading Theodor expert Max Browne, who has co-curated the exhibition, it will explore how Theodor’s work has undergone a resurgence, particularly in the past 15 years, with four paintings now in the Tate collection, all of which have been included in recent international touring exhibitions.

Alongside the exhibition, Holst Victorian House will present a programme of themed events, including Museum by Candlelight evenings around Halloween, in-conversation events with Theodor von Holst expert and exhibition co-curator Max Browne, creative writing and sketch workshops, Gothic zine-making, and book events exploring Frankenstein and the lesser-known classic Undine by Friedrich de la Motte Fouque.
