Keep Antibiotics Working (What You Need to Know)

Summary

Antibiotics are vital medicines that treat bacterial infections and save lives. But when they’re used incorrectly, bacteria can become resistant – meaning antibiotics may no longer work when we really need them. Antibiotic resistance is a growing global health concern, and we all have a part to play in protecting these important medicines.

Details

How You Can Help: 1. Don’t use antibiotics for colds or flu Colds, flu and most sore throats are caused by viruses. Antibiotics won’t help you recover and may cause unnecessary side effects.

2. Never save antibiotics for later Leftover antibiotics may not be right for a future illness and could make infections harder to treat. 3.

Take antibiotics exactly as prescribed. If your GP, nurse or pharmacist prescribes antibiotics, follow the instructions carefully. Finish the full course, even if you start to feel better.

Why It Matters: Using antibiotics responsibly helps ensure they remain effective for you, your family and future generations. If you’re unsure whether you need antibiotics, speak to one of our pharmacy team – we’re here to help. To find out more, visit: UK Health Security website Back to news
