Jail and animal ban for Gloucestershire man who beat his dog

Summary

A man from Gloucestershire has been jailed and banned from keeping animals for ten years after pleading guilty to beating his dog. Paul Lord (date of birth: 18.06.1980) of Dursley, Gloucestershire, was jailed for 18 weeks and banned from keeping animals for a decade, following an investigation and prosecution by the RSPCA.

Concerns were raised about Lord’s behaviour towards his dog, a mastiff called Ace, and footage of him mistreating his dog was shared with the animal welfare charity.

RSPCA Inspector Richard Carr, who investigated for the charity, said: “The footage showed Ace tethered in the garden and goes on to show Lord approach the dog, take a pole of some sort from behind his back and proceed to beat the poor dog multiple times with the pole. “The blows were delivered with some considerable force, especially the last two blows. You can hear the dog yelping.

It is a distressing video to watch especially as Ace is tethered and despite his efforts he cannot get away from the assault he is being subjected to. “We were also sent footage of the same dog being sprayed with water for a considerable amount of time. This footage shows Ace cowering and obviously uncomfortable.

This footage is also distressing to watch for similar reasons with the dog looking terrified and unable to get away from the experience and is heartbreaking.” Lord was told he cannot appeal the animal ban for seven years when he was sentenced at Cheltenham Magistrates Court on September 14. Ace was signed over into the care of the RSPCA and has since been rehomed.
