Laughter over repainting of redundant road marking amid 'waste of money' concerns

Summary

The partial repainting of redundant ‘keep clear’ road markings outside a long-closed Cotswolds school has sparked concerns money is being wasted on work that doesn’t need to be done. Fairford residents were amused last week to discover the word ‘keep’ had been painted in block capitals and in bright yellow after work had been carried out outside the former Coln House School in Horcott Road.

Details

It is believed the work was carried out by a utility company. Sandra Kolasinski, a local resident, said the road marking had made her laugh but she sees the work as a waste of money. And she questioned if the people marking the roads cannot question what they are told to do.

“The old Coln House School in Horcott Road, Fairford has been closed for ages and is in the process of being converted into new housing,” they said. “This particular end of Horcott Road has been dug up several times previously. “The first time the road was re-marked with SCHOOL KEEP CLEAR.

For no reason other than road markings need to be replaced even if no longer relevant. “These road markings are mostly worn away now, however when the road was partially dug up last week, they remarked the relevant part of the road. “Even though the rest of the markings can no longer be seen and it is no longer a school site.

There is now the word KEEP written on the road for no apparent reason. “Are the people who mark the roads not allowed to question why they are doing some? What a waste of money!” Stephen Andrews, a former Cotswold district councillor for the area, said it made no sense to repaint the signs on the road but the utility firm may have had to do it due to a technicality.

“I’m familiar with this location from when I was the local district councillor,” he said. “Clearly, it makes no sense to repaint signs on the road. Although technically, the utility company that did this, may have felt they had to.

“The problem may well lie with the traffic regulation order that ensures the school’s presence was known has not been cancelled after its closure years ago.” Gloucestershire County Council has been approached for comment.
