Summary

Since the series began in 2007, more than 500 local writers have achieved their first publication through the anthology, with some going on to wider success. Among them, Phil Bowne’s short story in the 2016 anthology, Reflections, formed part of his novel Cows Can’t Jump, winner of the Spotlight First Novel Prize.

Details

This year’s anthology, Ink and Influence, invited submissions of short stories, poetry, plays and visual art, all responding to the theme of “power”.

Chief Editor Jodi Green said: “When choosing ‘power’ as this year’s theme, we wanted to amplify underrepresented voices. The result is a diverse and compelling collection of work shaped by a wide range of perspectives and experiences.”

Ink and Influence reflects contributions from across the community, including University students and staff, local student playwriting groups, high schools, and retirees, demonstrating the breadth of creative talent in Gloucestershire.

The anthology began as an occasional publication in 2007 with Desire and Madness. Anthology lead, Dr Mike Johnston, now a Senior Lecturer at the University and published as DD Johnston, first appeared in the series while studying for his Master’s degree.

Dr Johnston said: “The road to publication is notoriously difficult. Being published before graduation made a huge difference to my confidence as a writer and inspired me to help develop the New Writing series into an annual publication.

It’s been incredibly rewarding to see it grow, expanding to include visual art and building partnerships with organisations including local schools, The Everyman Theatre and The Cheltenham Literature Festival.”

The launch event is open to the public and will take place on Thursday, 23 April from 6.30pm to 8pm at the Chapel, at the University’s Francis Close Hall Campus. It will include readings from the anthology and networking drinks with like-minded creatives.

Ink and Influence will be available to buy at the event.
