Cheltenham Mum’s Running Challenge for Sue Ryder Hospice After Best Friend’s Death

Cheltenham Mum’s Mammoth Running Challenge in Memory of Best Friend

A Cheltenham mother is set to take on an incredible running challenge next month, completing the London Marathon and then running over 100 miles back home to raise funds for Sue Ryder, a palliative care charity.

Details

Jane Shorting, 53, will run the London Marathon on 26 April in memory of her best friend Leigh Lawson, who passed away last year at the age of 58 after a five-year battle with triple negative breast cancer. Leigh spent her final days at the Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice, which provided her and her family with compassionate care and support.

The day after finishing the marathon, Jane will begin the 100-mile journey back to Cheltenham, running over the following three days and concluding her challenge at the Sue Ryder hospice. This was a promise she made to Leigh before she died.

Jane and her husband Mark, 62, are taking on the challenge together, with Mark also having a personal connection to the hospice. In 2025, Jane ran the London Marathon dressed as the Toy Story character Buzz Lightyear, FaceTiming Leigh along the route.
