Dozens of local residents gathered outside Stroud District Council’s offices on Monday to voice their opposition to the planned closure of the much-loved Stroud Lido. The protest came as council chiefs warned that the ageing outdoor pool facility posed unacceptable health and safety risks.
Protesters chanted “Shame on you!” and carried placards with slogans such as “Save Our Lido” and “Don’t Let Them Close Our Pool” as they packed the public gallery during the council meeting. Many spoke passionately about the cultural and community importance of the Stroud Lido, which has operated since the 1930s.
Council leader Doris Atkins, however, stated that the authority had no choice but to consider closing the lido due to growing concerns over structural issues and the prohibitive costs of necessary repairs and upgrades. “The safety of our residents has to be the top priority,” Atkins said. “We understand this will be hugely disappointing, but the harsh reality is that the lido is no longer fit for purpose and continuing to operate it would be irresponsible.”
The Stroud Lido closure proposal is expected to be discussed at the next full council meeting on 4 April 2026. Local residents are urged to attend or submit written comments to have their voices heard.
