New Gloucestershire Cycle Path Costs £50 Million, Used by Hundreds Daily

Gloucestershire’s “cycle spine” project, a 26-mile route connecting Bishop’s Cleeve with Stroud via Cheltenham and Gloucester, has cost around £50 million so far, according to figures revealed at a recent Gloucestershire County Council meeting. The council says the project will contribute to a significant active travel network across the county, aligning with their aim to deliver high-quality cycling and pedestrian facilities.

The council’s cabinet member for sustainable transport, Liberal Democrat Councillor Roger Whyborn, stated that around half of the 26-mile route has been completed, with work ongoing in Gloucester city centre. The majority of the funding for the project has come from third-party sources, such as bids to central government, which are ring-fenced for cycling, walking, and wheeling initiatives.

Whyborn also shared data on the route’s usage, noting that cycle volumes have approximately doubled compared to pre-COVID levels. At Arle Court in Cheltenham, the daily cycle count has increased from around 200 to 400 per day. Near Brickhampton Golf Course, the current cycle volumes are in the order of 500 per day, based on annual data collected each October.
