Major M5 Upgrade at Junction 10 Underway in Cheltenham

Work has begun on a transformational £372 million project to revamp junction 10 of the M5 motorway near Cheltenham. The improvements, which are expected to be completed by 2029, will provide access in all directions and include widening the A4019 Tewkesbury Road, a new link road to the B4634, as well as new cycle paths, walkways, and flood mitigation measures.

Details

The extensive upgrades, which will cover an area larger than 260 football pitches, are seen as vital in unlocking Gloucestershire’s economic potential. The project is designed to support £4 billion of economic activity and enable planned housing developments, including 4,115 new homes and 60 acres of employment land at the Elms Park site.

Gloucestershire County Council’s infrastructure cabinet member Julian Tooke described the scheme as a “catalyst for transformational growth” between Birmingham and Bristol. Council leader Lisa Spivey said the project was key to their plans for growth along the M5 corridor and was made possible thanks to crucial funding from Homes England.

Cheltenham MP Max Wilkinson expressed relief at finally seeing progress on the long-awaited project, which has been a “longstanding bugbear of residents” due to the deficiencies at junction 10.
