Gloucestershire NHS Trust Launches E-Bike Trial in Cheltenham

Gloucestershire NHS Trust Pioneers E-Bike Initiative in Cheltenham

In a move towards sustainable transportation, the Gloucestershire Health & Care NHS Trust has launched a two-year trial of electric bicycles (e-bikes) for its colleagues in Cheltenham. The initiative aims to reduce the organisation’s carbon footprint, improve employee health and wellbeing, and explore the potential benefits of e-bikes for the Trust’s operations.

Details

The trial, which began in late November, involves the delivery of five new e-bikes to the Leckhampton Lodge site. Six colleagues from the Children and Young People’s Services (CYPS) department will be participating in the pilot project, using the e-bikes for home visits and other work-related travel.

The Trust’s decision to explore e-bike usage aligns with the NHS’s national plans to reduce carbon emissions, improve air quality, and minimise travel-related emissions. As part of this broader initiative, the Gloucestershire Health & Care NHS Trust is also working towards expanding its electric vehicle fleet and increasing the number of charging points available.

Louise Cleveland, the operational lead for Cheltenham CYPS, emphasised the potential benefits of the e-bike trial. “As an environmentally friendly alternative to a car, e-bikes will contribute to our sustainability goals while easing parking and congestion. Cycling can also improve colleagues’ mental and physical health, while the increased visibility of our community mental health team may help reduce stigma and encourage more engagement.”

To ensure the safety and preparedness of the participating colleagues, cycling proficiency training has been provided, and new recharging and storage facilities have been installed at the Charlton Lane site. Additionally, the Trust has leased the e-bikes from DASH, a cycle provider specialising in work-related active travel, and has provided clothing and panniers as part of the arrangement.

What You Need to Know

The e-bike trial is funded by Active Travel Gloucestershire, a county-wide plan aimed at increasing the volume of cyclists and developing a network of cycle routes from Bishop’s Cleeve to Stroud.

The Trust will closely monitor the trial, evaluating factors such as the number of trips undertaken, the associated reduction in carbon emissions, changes in mileage costs, service impact, colleague satisfaction, and overall quality assessments. The goal is to determine the viability of e-bikes as a sustainable transportation option for the Trust’s operations in Cheltenham.

If the trial proves successful, the Trust plans to expand the e-bike initiative to include more participants and potentially explore the use of e-bikes in other work specialities.
