The transformation of the former Chambers pub in Gloucester’s King’s Square has split opinion among local councillors, with the “bold and bright” colour scheme of the new Coro Lounge venue drawing mixed reactions.
Hospitality group Loungers is behind the redevelopment, which will see the site turned into a family-friendly cafe and bar. The company, which also runs Portivo Lounge, Fioro Lounge, and Cosy Club venues across Gloucestershire, received planning approval for the project in December.
Coro Lounge is set to offer food and drinks from morning to evening, seven days a week, and aims to become a “home from home” for visitors. Workers were spotted painting the exterior of the former pub on 26 March, with the new colour scheme seemingly reflecting that of the nearby Forum building.
The vibrant new look has divided opinion among the three Westgate ward councillors on Gloucester City Council. Liberal Democrat Councillor Howard Hyman suggested there should be a “re-think” on the colour, as it does not “blend in with the rest of the square.”
However, Conservative Councillor Pam Tracey expressed her love for the new design, and said she is “really pleased the site will soon be used again.” Meanwhile, Liberal Democrat Councillor Rebecca Trimnell described the lounge’s colour as “strikingly bold and bright,” but stated she is looking forward to its opening.
