Cirencester Hospital’s Future Undergoing Evaluation Through Temporary Changes

The Gloucestershire Health & Care NHS Trust has reassured the local community that no permanent decisions have been made regarding the future of Cirencester Hospital. The Trust is currently trialling changes to some hospital services as part of an evaluation process to improve efficiency and patient care.

Details

One of the key changes is the introduction of a new 15-bed frailty complex care unit at Cirencester Hospital. This specialised unit has been developed to directly address the needs of the local population, providing rehabilitative care for patients with more complex physical and mental health requirements compared to the previous inpatient model.

Additionally, the Trust has temporarily paused planned day case surgery at the hospital’s community theatre, which is leased by Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Surgical activity previously carried out at Cirencester is now taking place at other sites across the county. This “test of change” aims to evaluate the impact of centralising specific surgical procedures to improve efficiency, reduce patient cancellations, and make better use of resources.

It is important to note that the community theatres in Gloucestershire are used by patients from across the county, not just those living near a particular site. Many one-off surgical procedures are accessed by people who choose to travel within the county to access specialist services.

What You Need to Know

The Trust has emphasised that these changes are temporary and part of an evaluation process. After the trials, the Trust will review the data, patient outcomes, staff and public feedback to determine the next steps, including further engagement with stakeholders as necessary.

All other existing services at Cirencester Hospital, including the Minor Injury and Illness Unit, inpatient services, outpatient services, and the work of the community teams, continue as normal. The Trust has also stressed that there are no plans to close Cirencester Hospital, and it remains an important asset for the future of local healthcare.
