A local foster mother has expressed her shock and dismay at the case of a Cheltenham woman who allegedly kept a slave for over 25 years. The woman, named Amanda Wixon, is accused of subjecting the victim to decades of abuse and exploitation in her home.
The foster mother, who wishes to remain anonymous, says she is “appalled” that the case did not come to the attention of authorities sooner. “How on earth could this go on for so long without anyone noticing or doing something about it?” she questioned. “There needs to be a full inquiry to understand how this was allowed to happen right under our noses.”
According to reports, the victim was a vulnerable young woman who was forced to work as a domestic servant in Wixon’s home from the age of 18 until she was finally freed in her 40s. She was allegedly subjected to physical and psychological abuse, had no freedom of movement, and was paid only a small amount of money for her labour.
The case has sent shockwaves through the local community, with many residents expressing disbelief that such abuses could take place. Gloucestershire Police have launched a full investigation, and the Crown Prosecution Service is considering charges against Wixon.
Anyone with information that could assist the inquiry is urged to contact the Gloucestershire Police on 101, quoting incident number 4526 of 14 March 2026. Support services for victims of modern slavery are also available through the National Modern Slavery Helpline on 0800 0121 700.
