Cheltenham Lido Secures Future with Lengthy Lease Extension

Cheltenham Borough Council has announced an exciting development for the town’s beloved Lido, extending its lease for nearly a century. The agreement ensures the iconic outdoor swimming pool will remain a cherished community asset for generations to come.

Details

The original lease between the Council and the charitable organisation running the Lido began back in 1996, lasting 25 years until 2021. A second lease was then granted in 2021, set to expire in 2056.

However, recognising the Lido’s immense value to Cheltenham residents and visitors, the Council has now agreed to a Reversionary Lease. This will automatically commence in 2056 and run until 2120, providing the Lido with long-term protection and stability.

Councillor Izaac Tailford, Cabinet Member for Economic Development, Culture, Wellbeing and Public Realm, expressed his pride in securing this “legacy for our town”. He highlighted the Lido’s status as a “fantastic facility loved by so many” and praised the team’s excellent work in operating and improving this “Cheltenham icon”.

Julie Sargent, Chief Executive of Cheltenham Lido, welcomed the news, stating the extended lease is “vital to the future” of this much-loved community asset. She noted the Lido’s significance across Cheltenham and the wider South of England region, and emphasised her gratitude to the Council for their support and forward-thinking approach.

What You Need to Know

The Cheltenham Lido will open for its heated season on Saturday, 28th March at 11am. To mark the occasion, the entry price will be just 2p – the same as the original cost when the Lido first opened in 1935.
