Residents of Cheltenham were left without tap water for over 20 hours on Monday as utility company Severn Trent battled to repair a burst water main in the town centre. Three local schools were forced to close for the day due to the disruption.
The water main burst early Monday morning on Clarence Street in Cheltenham’s town centre, causing extensive flooding and a complete loss of water supply to nearby homes and businesses. Severn Trent dispatched emergency repair crews to the site, but the utility company has described the repair work as “complex”.
A spokesperson for Severn Trent said the burst main was an older cast-iron pipe that had split, requiring extensive excavation and replacement of the damaged section. They noted that the water pressure in the area would likely be low or inconsistent even after the main was repaired, and residents should expect some discolouration or bubbles in their tap water as the system is refilled.
